Waxwings pair off by passing a single berry back and forth along a branch — he offers, she takes it, she offers it back — hopping closer with every exchange until the ritual is complete and they are a pair for the season. This photograph catches the pass itself: the berry held between two beaks, both birds leaning in, crests raised, on a lichen-covered branch with the woods falling away behind them.
It is a difficult frame to get. The exchange lasts a second or two, it happens deep in cover, and both birds have to be sharp for it to mean anything. I spent years around cedar waxwings before this one came together.
