Description

The moment of the strike. Feet in the water, wings thrown up and back, spray coming off the surface — and the whole river behind rendered in pink, gold and pale blue by the light off the ripples. None of that color is added. It is sky reflected in moving water, broken up into something that looks painted.

I am fairly sure this one was a miss.

Which makes it, to me, the more interesting photograph. We tend to publish the successes — the fish held like a torpedo, the clean carry — and quietly leave out how much of an osprey’s day consists of hitting the water and coming up with nothing. Estimates of their strike success vary a good deal between studies and conditions, but plenty of them land well under half. This is a bird whose entire profession involves failing repeatedly in public.

And it simply goes again. That is the part worth sitting with. After a miss an osprey climbs back out of the water, shakes itself off in mid-air like a wet dog — a full-body shudder while flying, which almost nothing else does — then goes back to hovering and looks for the next one. No sulking, no deciding it is not a fishing sort of day. It hovers, it commits, it fails, it climbs, it hovers again.

There is a lesson in that, and I do not think it is a stretch. Nobody photographs the misses. Nobody counts the mornings that produced nothing, the dives that came up empty, the prototypes that failed on the bench. But the bird that eats is not the bird that never missed — it is the bird that went back up.

This is a high-resolution digital download of the photograph, made in Oregon — yours to print for your home or office, set as a wallpaper, or simply keep. The pastel color and the square format make this the most painterly image in the collection, and it would hang comfortably in a room that has nothing else to do with birds.

What you’ll receive: a high-resolution JPEG, approximately 4096 × 4096 pixels — a true square, sharp enough to print at full photo quality up to about 13.5 inches on a side at 300 DPI, and considerably larger for wall display. Delivered as an instant download the moment your order is complete.
