An osprey coming up off the water with nothing. Wings raised at the top of the stroke, feet still dripping, talons empty, already climbing. Every water drop is frozen and every feather is sharp — this is the cleanest frame in the collection.
He came up short. And what he is doing in this photograph is going back up to try again.
The climb-out is the hardest athletic moment in the whole sequence, and it is the part people never think about. A hawk that misses is still in the air. An osprey that misses is in the water, with soaked plumage, no ground to push against, and nothing to launch from but the surface itself. Ospreys are among the very few raptors that can take off directly from water at all — they haul themselves out with two or three enormous downstrokes, and this frame is the instant before one of them.
They are built for exactly this. Osprey plumage is unusually dense and oily for a raptor, which keeps it from waterlogging on a plunge that would leave a red-tailed hawk swimming. Even so it is heavy work, and it has to be done immediately, every time, whether the dive succeeded or not.
This photograph and the pastel strike elsewhere in this collection are two halves of the same story: the attempt, then the recovery. I find I like the pair better than any picture of a fish being carried home. The carry is the reward. This is the work.
