Description
A green sweat bee on a lavender aster, shot against open blue sky — one of my favorite photographs of any insect I’ve made. The metallic green head and thorax are real, structural color, the same trick that makes a hummingbird’s gorget flash: light split by microscopic architecture, not pigment.
The banded gold-and-black abdomen identifies this one as a male Agapostemon. Females wear metallic green from head to tail; only the males get the striped tuxedo. And despite the family’s unfortunate name, these are exceptionally peaceful bees — fast, busy, and entirely uninterested in people.
