My neighbors call it “magical,” and I think they’re right. In a small urban space I’ve created a thriving, wildlife-friendly garden that’s as beautiful as it is productive. With organic soil and fertilizer, a carbon‑filtered drip irrigation system, and a constantly cleaned fountain that doubles as a bird bath, my beds support butterflies, a variety of bees, and many birds — and they also produce figs, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, herbs and vegetables that I’m proud to share with neighbors.
Even in a small urban plot, the garden has been generous. A Green fig tree produced sweet fruit, grape vines climb a trellis and provide late‑summer bounty, and berries — blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries — have given us fresh healthy snacking fruit, and plenty to share. Giving neighbors a basket of fruit or a handful of fresh herbs is one of my favorite parts of gardening. They’re grateful, and it feels great to show that you don’t need acres to grow food and support wildlife.
In addition, I have added suet and bird feeders to support the local bird population. Some of my visitors include, Downy Woodpeckers, Bushtits, Red and White Breasted Nuthatches, Chickadees, Steller’s Jays, Song Sparrows, Spotted Towhees, Golden Crowned Sparrows, Anna’s Hummingbirds, Dark Eyed Juncos, American Robins, Downy Woodpeckers, Red Breasted Sap Suckers, and Scrub Jays,
