Scenes from my Garden

A few scenes from the garden this season — a rose letting go, roses planted for strangers, and lilies caught in the last good light. Different flowers, one quiet idea: that beauty is always either being shared, or passing through.

The rose that’s letting go

Pink roses this morning — one full and open, one at the end of its bloom, petals loosening, ready to fall.

I used to see that as an ending. I don’t anymore. All beauty fades — but fading isn’t vanishing. The petals let go to feed the soil, so the next bloom can rise behind them. The beauty isn’t lost; it just gets handed forward.

That’s what the garden keeps teaching me: nothing beautiful ever really ends. It only becomes what comes next.

Roses for the street

Orange and pink, and they love the sun. I planted these along our street — a small thing, but every summer they open up for anyone who happens to walk by.

That’s the quiet magic of this place. All over Portland, people tuck roses along their curbs and sidewalks, and it adds up. Block by block, garden by garden — that’s how a city earns a name like the City of Roses.

You don’t need a rose garden to add to it. You just plant a few by the street and let the whole neighborhood share them.

Lilies in the golden hour

Oriental lilies — these ones I grew myself, from the ground up. Caught in the golden hour, when the light goes soft and low and turns everything it touches to honey.

There’s a patience to this. You tend a thing for months, never quite knowing when it’ll open. And the good light — the really good light — lasts only a few minutes at the end of the day. So much of the beauty is just showing up: for the bloom, and for the moment it glows.
