Description

A young green heron crouched low among fallen branches, with duckweed spreading across the water behind him in exactly the shade of green he is named for. That heavy streaking down the breast is what marks him as a juvenile — an adult wears a clean chestnut neck and a smooth slate-green back, while a young bird gets this rough brown-and-cream pinstripe, which is far better camouflage for a bird still learning the job.

Green herons are the small ones. Where a great blue heron stands four feet tall, this bird is closer to the size of a crow, and it hunts by folding itself into a hunched, neckless lump at the water’s edge and waiting. Then the neck comes out. It is startlingly long when it wants to be — the whole thing is stored folded, like a carpenter’s rule.

And this is the species worth knowing about, because green herons are one of the very few birds on earth documented using tools. They drop bait on the water — an insect, a feather, a twig, a scrap of bread — then wait motionless for a curious fish to come up and investigate. Deliberate lure fishing, worked out independently of us, happening in ponds all over Portland. This youngster has all of that ahead of him.

One note on the name: the green is real but shy. It takes good light at the right angle to show, which is why most people who meet one walk away describing a small dark bird.
