Description

Some evenings the sky simply puts on a show. This was one of them — a break in a wall of storm cloud over Oregon’s Willamette Valley, and the sun pouring through it in great shafts of light.

These beams have a name: crepuscular rays. They form when sunlight streams through gaps in the clouds and catches the haze and moisture in the air, drawing those long, luminous columns across the sky. They look like they fan out from a single point, but that’s a trick of perspective — the rays run very nearly parallel, all the way back to the sun.

I caught this one on an ordinary evening out in the Willamette Valley and shared it with my neighbors back home — and it struck a nerve I didn’t expect. Thousands of people stopped to look, and a great many of them said it made their day. There’s something about light breaking through the dark that people need to see.

And people kept seeing more than weather in it. Many called these shafts of light God rays. Others looked into the clouds where the brightness breaks through and saw the same figure — an angel, kneeling in prayer. Once it’s pointed out, it’s hard to un-see. Whether the eye finds it or the mind makes it, that name and that quiet shape are part of why this image stayed with so many people. This is that photograph, offered here as a high-resolution digital download to keep.

What you’ll receive: a very high-resolution JPEG, approximately 9560 × 7168 pixels — big enough to print as large wall art at full photo quality (roughly 32 × 24 inches at 300 DPI, and larger still for display). Delivered as an instant download the moment your order is complete.
