Some mornings the forest turns into a cathedral. This is Sellwood Park’s old growth just after sunrise — morning mist hanging in the canopy, and the sun breaking through it in great visible rays, the kind many of my neighbors call God rays. I shot it with a wide-angle lens pointed straight up, so the huge old trunks rise like pillars and gather toward the light.
The mist is what makes the moment: it turns light you normally can’t see into something you can stand inside. Ten minutes later the sun had burned it off and the cathedral was ordinary forest again. That’s the trade the early walk makes — and why I carry the camera.
