Description
A western screech owl tucked into a weathered snag at Oaks Bottom, and the camouflage is close to total — the gray vermiculated plumage runs straight into the grain of the dead wood, the dark streaks line up with the cracks, and the outline simply stops existing. Then there is the eye: one brilliant yellow disc, wide open, watching.
The eye is always what gives them away, and the owls know it. A concealed owl narrows its eyes to slits, because nothing else on that trunk is a smooth bright circle. Photographers find owls the same way predators and mobbing songbirds do — not by spotting a bird, but by noticing one wrong shape in the bark.
The color of that eye is worth knowing too, because it may tell you when an owl works. There is a long-standing rule of thumb among birders: yellow eyes belong to owls active in daylight and twilight; dark eyes belong to the strictly nocturnal ones. Compare this screech owl — a crepuscular hunter, out at dusk and dawn, yellow-eyed — with the barred owls elsewhere in this collection, whose eyes are almost black and who do their work in full darkness. The correlation is not perfect and biologists still argue about the mechanism, but once you have seen it you will check the eyes of every owl you meet.
