Description
A barred owl turned three-quarters to the camera against a moss-covered trunk, with the forest behind him going dark and warm and a few lit leaves hanging at the edge of the frame. Soft light, deep green, and a bird entirely at home in it.
This angle shows exactly where the name comes from, and it is worth knowing because it is the whole identification. Look at the chest: horizontal bars running across it, like a collar of stripes. Then look lower: below that the pattern turns and becomes vertical streaks down the belly. Bars above, streaks below — that combination is a barred owl and nothing else. The great horned owl has the ear tufts, the spotted owl is covered in white spots rather than bars, and the screech owl is a quarter the size.
Two more things about the plumage. It is remarkably soft — the velvety surface that makes their flight silent also means it is not especially waterproof, which is why in a hard Oregon rain you will find them tucked in tight against a trunk under cover rather than sitting out in the open like this one.
And when a pair gets going, the polite “who cooks for you” hooting is only the introduction. Barred owls duet, and their full courtship exchange is an escalating racket of cackles, gurgles, hoots and shrieks that sounds far more like a troop of monkeys than a dignified owl. Birders call it caterwauling. Hear it once in the dark and you will never forget it.
