And the menu is far broader than the name “fish-eating bird” suggests. Great blue herons take frogs, crayfish, snakes, large insects, and a surprising quantity of rodents — voles and gophers hunted in dry grass, well away from any water at all. If you ever see a heron standing motionless in the middle of a field, it is not lost. It is hunting mice.
