A great blue heron at close range in low sun, head and shoulders filling the frame, with the river behind him gone to soft ripples of blue. The black plume streams back from behind the yellow eye, the shaggy gray neck feathers hang loose, and the bill runs off the edge of the picture like a length of pale steel.
Spend a moment on that eye, because it does something ours cannot. A heron’s eyes sit on the sides of its head, which gives it a wide view of the world and very little depth perception — useless for judging the exact distance to a fish. So it rotates its eyes forward and downward, swinging them into a narrow zone of binocular overlap looking straight along the bill. That is the moment the strike becomes possible: two eyes on one target, distance solved, neck released.
Those eyes work after dark, too. Great blue herons will fish at night, which is why you sometimes hear that harsh croak passing over a Portland neighborhood long after sunset.
