Description
A female belted kingfisher on a bare branch in late afternoon light, the autumn canopy behind her burning the same rust as the band across her belly. That band is how you know she is female — belted kingfishers are one of the few North American birds in which the female is the more colorful of the pair. The male has only the blue-grey band and nothing below it.
