Description
A great white egret standing in front of deep blue water, framed by a scatter of fine bare branches. The blue is the river holding the sky, thrown soft by a long lens; the branches keep their sharpness and turn the frame into a kind of natural lattice around her.
A white bird against dark water is one of the harder things to photograph well. Expose for the background and the bird burns out into a white shape with no feathers in it. Expose for the bird and the whole scene goes muddy. Everything worth looking at here lives in a narrow band at the top of the range — the shadow under the wing, the faint gray modeling along the neck, the individual barbs of the long plumes trailing down over the legs. Hold that detail and the bird stays a bird instead of a cutout.
Those trailing plumes are breeding finery, grown for the season and worn like a train. The bill tells you the species at a glance: yellow bill and black legs is a great white egret, while a snowy egret wears the opposite — black bill and bright yellow feet.
The frame is nearly square, which is unusual for a wildlife photograph and makes it an easy fit for square frames and for a phone or tablet background.
