A barred owl in a tangle of mossy branches, head tilted slightly, looking directly into the lens with those extraordinary dark eyes. Most owls you meet in Oregon have yellow eyes. The barred owl is the exception — deep brown, almost black, and the effect is entirely different. A yellow-eyed owl looks fierce. This one looks like it is considering you.
You will hear him long before you see him, and once you learn the call you will never mistake it. A barred owl asks a question: birders write it down as “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?” — eight hoots with a drawl on the last note, carrying a remarkable distance through wet Douglas fir. Of all the birds in these woods, the one that sounds like an interrogation is also the one most likely to sit still and stare at you while you fumble with a camera.
And he arrives without a sound. Owl flight is silent by engineering: the leading edge of the outermost flight feathers is fringed into a fine comb that breaks the rush of air into small eddies instead of one loud stream, the trailing edges are frayed soft, and the whole wing surface is covered in a velvety pile that absorbs what noise remains. The result is a predator that can cross a clearing in total silence — inaudible to the mouse, and inaudible to you. Engineers have copied that serrated edge onto wind turbine blades and aircraft to quiet them down.
He also has a second career on my Nature Is Funny page, where he plays the Bridgekeeper and demands to know the airspeed of an unladen swallow. Given the call, it seemed like typecasting.
