Description

A bald eagle on the wing at Neskowin, on the Oregon coast, caught close and side-on with the breaking surf thrown soft behind him. The near wing is swept up at the top of the stroke, the tail is fanned, and the yellow feet are drawn up tight against the body — a bird trimmed for speed, running the beach.

This frame shows the underside of the wing better than almost any I have made: the layered coverts, the dark flight feathers separating into slots at the tip, and the way the whole surface curves into an airfoil. Those slotted primaries do the same job as the winglets on an airliner, breaking up the vortex that spills off a wingtip and recovering lift that would otherwise be wasted. Engineers arrived at the idea a very long time after the eagles did.

Coastal eagles live differently from river eagles. The beach provides fish, seabirds, and whatever the tide delivers, and a bird working the surf line reads the wind coming off the water the way a sailor does. I have spent a good part of my life at Neskowin with a camera, and mornings like this one are why I keep going back.

He is also a survivor of one of the great conservation reversals in American history. By the early 1960s, DDT had thinned bald eagle eggshells until fewer than 500 nesting pairs remained in the entire lower 48 states. The chemical was banned, the law protected them, and the birds came all the way back — delisted in 2007. Every eagle photographed on this coast today is a direct result of that decision.
