Description

A bald eagle in flight down the south beach at Neskowin, on the Oregon coast, with the breaking waves thrown out of focus behind him. He is turned side-on to the camera, wings raised, feet tucked up under the tail, moving fast and low along the surf line.

Look at the wingtips. Those long primary feathers spread apart into separate fingers — slotted, like the winglets on an airliner — and they do the same job, breaking up the vortex that spills off the end of a wing and turning wasted turbulence into lift. It is what lets a bird this heavy ride a sea breeze along a beach for an hour without a single deep wingbeat. Aeronautical engineers studied this arrangement for decades before putting a version of it on aircraft.

Coastal eagles live differently from river eagles. The beach provides fish, seabirds, and whatever the tide delivers, and a bird working the surf line has learned to read the wind coming off the water the way a sailor does. I have spent a good part of my life at Neskowin with a camera, and frames like this one are the reason I keep going back.

He is also a survivor of one of the great conservation reversals in American history. By the early 1960s, DDT had thinned bald eagle eggshells until fewer than 500 nesting pairs remained in the entire lower 48 states. The chemical was banned, the law protected them, and the birds came all the way back — delisted in 2007. Every eagle photographed on this coast today is a direct result of that decision.
