A bald eagle coming in to land, caught with everything deployed at once: both wings out to their full span to kill speed, the tail fanned as an airbrake, and the feet swung forward with the talons already spread for the branch. The whole manoeuvre takes about a second and a half, and this is the middle of it.
It is the frame that shows you how big they actually are. A perched eagle keeps its wings folded away and looks large but manageable; open them and you are looking at six to seven and a half feet across — wider than most people are tall. Here the whole span is out, every primary feather separated at the tip, lit from the front against a clean blue sky.
Those talons are close to two inches of curved bone and keratin, and the grip behind them is roughly ten times what a human hand can produce — strong enough to hold a struggling fish in flight. What you are watching is all of that being aimed at one branch, at speed, without a mistake.
He is also a survivor of one of the great conservation reversals in American history. By the early 1960s, DDT had thinned bald eagle eggshells until fewer than 500 nesting pairs remained in the entire lower 48 states. The chemical was banned, the law protected them, and the birds came all the way back — delisted in 2007. Every eagle photographed in Oregon today is a direct result of that decision.
