A male American kestrel in low autumn light, turned back over his shoulder with the woods behind him gone to green and gold bokeh. Rufous back barred in black, blue-gray wings, orange feet gripping a thin branch. This is the largest file in the entire collection — made deliberately for very big output.

He is also, at about four ounces, the smallest falcon in North America. Roughly the weight of a deck of cards, roughly the size of a jay, and a fully equipped predator.

Read the face, because this frame settles an argument I have had with myself elsewhere in this collection. Two black stripes run down the white cheek — one under the eye, one further back — and every kestrel wears both, male or female, adult or young. The eye is dark, near black, as every falcon’s is. And look closely at the upper bill: there is a distinct notch on the cutting edge, the tomial tooth, which falcons use to sever the spine of prey.

Those three marks are exactly what a hawk does not have. I once published a juvenile Cooper’s hawk as a merlin, and it was the pale yellow eye and the clean cheek that eventually gave it away. This photograph is the control specimen.

The color tells you this is a male, and that is genuinely unusual. In most raptors the sexes look alike and differ only in size — a female red-tailed hawk is simply a bigger red-tailed hawk. Kestrels break the pattern: males carry blue-gray wings over a rufous back, while females are rufous on both wings and back and barred throughout. They are one of very few raptors anywhere that you can sex from a photograph on color alone, and they still keep the usual arrangement on top of it, since the female is the larger bird.

One more thing, on the back of his head. Kestrels have two black spots on the nape called ocelli — false eyes. The working theory is that they discourage attack from behind, so that anything sizing up a small falcon from the rear finds it apparently staring straight back. A four-ounce bird surrounded by larger predators has to be looking in every direction at once, and this one has arranged to appear as though it is.

And they hunt with a sense we do not have. Kestrels can see into the ultraviolet, and the urine and scent trails that voles leave along their runways reflect UV light. The finding came out of work on their European cousins, and the implication is remarkable: a kestrel hovering over a field is not scanning hopefully for movement. It is reading a glowing map of where the rodents have been.

They are also in trouble. American kestrel numbers have fallen substantially across the continent, and the causes are still argued over — loss of open ground, fewer big insects, fewer nesting cavities. They cannot excavate their own holes, so they depend on old woodpecker nests and, increasingly, on boxes people put up for them. It is one of the few conservation problems an individual can meaningfully act on from a fence post.
