Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Cedar Waxwings at the Oak Bottom Wildlife Refuge using my new Fuji XH2 camera paired with a 400mm Fuji lens and a 1.2 teleconverter. The combination of this advanced camera and lens setup has truly elevated my wildlife photography, allowing me to capture these stunning birds with incredible resolution and improved autofocus capabilities.
Cedar Waxwings are known for their striking appearance, featuring sleek, silky plumage in shades of soft brown, yellow, and gray, complemented by their distinctive black mask and bright yellow-tipped tail feathers. These social birds often gather in flocks, making them a delightful sight to observe and photograph. Their diet primarily consists of fruits, particularly berries, and they are often seen feasting on berries from cedar and other fruit-bearing trees.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Cedar Waxwings is their propensity for communal feeding. They often take turns swallowing berries, with some birds even engaging in a behavior known as “berry passing,” where one bird will pass a berry to another. This cooperative feeding strategy adds a dynamic element to their behavior, making them even more interesting subjects for photography.
