Backyard, Street, Refuge: Portland in Bloom

This year the garden is talking back.

Last spring I planted about five new rose bushes along my street — the small, sun-loving variety that you see everywhere in Portland once you start looking. They went into the ground as bare-rooted stems with a few hopeful canes. A year on, they’re earning their place.

From the garden. The kind I bring to a neighbor.

This one was cut for a neighbor. Cream at the base, pink deepening at the edges, water still on the petals. Roses from a garden are a different gift than roses from a store — same flower, different story.

A smaller sun-loving rose, the variety planted along the street

The street-planted variety is smaller per bloom but more abundant — one bush can throw dozens of flowers in a good season. Portland is the City of Roses for a reason. People plant them. They plant them on their property lines, in their parking strips, in the corners of their yards facing the sidewalk. The city is a continuous flower garden by design and by neighborly habit.

Purple wildflowers with a bumblebee

This bumblebee was working a stand of purple wildflowers nearby. Bumblebees are part of why any of this works — without them the garden doesn’t pollinate, the roses don’t propagate, the next year’s bushes don’t exist. The whole system runs on bees doing what looks like nothing important.

A field of yellow wildflowers at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge

And here is Oaks Bottom — the wildlife refuge a few minutes from my house, where the city’s cultivated flowers give way to the field’s wild ones. A whole stretch of yellow wildflowers blooming at once. Nobody planted them. They just arrive, every year, on schedule.

And a single daisy in golden hour, the kind of light that makes you stop walking and pull out the camera.

Backyard, neighborhood, street, refuge. The city is in bloom this week.
