A Tiny Visitor: Gray Hairstreak on My Cosmos

The other day a tiny gray butterfly landed on a cosmos bloom in my garden, and I was lucky enough to get a macro shot of the moment. Up close, the little visitor was exquisite: soft gray wings with a delicate white line, a small orange spot near the tail, and those thin “tails” that give hairstreaks their name. It was sipping nectar intently, completely absorbed in the flower.

Identification

This looks like a gray hairstreak (Strymon melinus), a common and widespread species found in many gardens. They’re small and often overlooked, but their subtle colors and fine tail-like extensions make them charming subjects for close-up photography.

Why it mattered to me

Beyond being a striking photograph, the encounter reminded me how important these small butterflies are to the life of a garden. While butterflies aren’t usually as efficient as bees at pollination, they still transfer pollen as they probe flowers for nectar, and they contribute to biodiversity and the overall health of the ecosystem.

Cosmos are perfect nectar sources: they bloom for a long time, offer easy access to nectar on flat, open flower heads, and are attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. If you grow from seed, you can enjoy a continuous display that keeps pollinators coming back all season.
