A Curious Visitor at Oaks Bottom

I was out at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge the other day when I noticed movement along the water’s edge. A North American river otter had pulled itself up onto a log and was just… staring at me.

Most wildlife bolt the second they clock a human. This one didn’t. It perched there on the deadfall, wet fur catching the light, and studied me with the same curiosity I had for it. We had a solid minute of just sizing each other up.

River otters are one of Portland’s quiet success stories. Oaks Bottom is one of the last urban wetlands in the city — a floodplain marsh tucked between Sellwood and the Willamette. It’s home to great blue herons, bald eagles, beavers, and apparently at least one very bold otter who doesn’t mind a camera.

I stayed low, kept still, and let the lens do the work. Two of my favorite frames from the encounter are below. That second shot — the direct eye contact with the head tilted up — is the kind of moment you can’t plan. You just have to be there and be ready.

 

If you’re in SE Portland and haven’t walked the Oaks Bottom trail, go. Early morning, stay quiet, and bring a long lens. You never know who’s watching you back.

 

These are very curious creatures. I stay a safe distance and I am able to get these photos with a powerful lens.

 

Here is a River otter eating a Carp. They have powerful jaws and sharp teeth for eating these tough skinned fish.
