A Curious Raccoon

Not every face at the water’s edge has feathers. Down at Oaks Bottom, this raccoon came ambling along the bank and stopped to size me up — black mask, bright calculating eyes, fixed right on me. Curious, unbothered, and clearly deciding whether I was worth the trouble.

Raccoons are among the most intelligent animals in the neighborhood, and easily the most dexterous. Those front paws are nearly handlike — packed with nerve endings and sensitive enough to identify food by touch alone, which is how a raccoon opens a latch, a jar, or a “raccoon-proof” bin and then looks faintly insulted that you tried. They remember the solution to a problem for years.

And this one wasn’t traveling alone. She was leading a little procession — a family of about three trailing along behind her on the bank. Young raccoons stick close to their mother through that first summer, following her on exactly these kinds of foraging patrols, learning the where and the how of making a living at the water’s edge. Which recasts that curious stare a little: she wasn’t only sizing me up for herself.

We file them away as masked bandits, but what you mostly see up close is that relentless curiosity — and this time, a mother keeping half an eye on a stranger while her kits caught up. They’ve thrived right alongside us precisely because of that curiosity. On a quiet afternoon by the water, it runs both ways.
