Description

A great white egret throwing her wings wide in the morning sun while a great blue heron stands behind her on the bank, watching, entirely unimpressed. Two of the best fishing birds in Portland, one stretch of shoreline, and an argument in progress.

The pose is not decoration. Spreading the wings like this is a genuine territorial display, the standard currency of a dispute over a good fishing spot. Herons and egrets settle these things with posture — wings out, plumes raised, bill up — because an actual fight risks a broken wing, and a broken wing is fatal. Almost all of it is theater, and almost all of it works.

What makes the picture funny is the arithmetic. The great blue heron is the larger bird by a comfortable margin — a foot taller, roughly twice the weight — and he is the one giving ground. Great white egrets are famously pushy for their size, and a determined one will routinely displace a bigger, more patient neighbor.

This frame is the one behind the “People know who I am” image on my Nature Is Funny page, where these two are running an ongoing feud.

This is a high-resolution digital download of the photograph, made in Portland, Oregon — yours to print for your home or office, set as a wallpaper, or simply keep.
