A great blue heron crossing the shallows on the downstroke, wings fully extended, neck folded tight against the shoulders and legs streamed out straight behind. This is the shape you learn to recognize from a quarter mile away, long before you can make out a single feather.
That folded neck is the field mark. Herons and egrets fly with the neck tucked back into an S; cranes, storks and geese fly with it stretched straight out ahead. One glance at the silhouette settles the argument. And the reason for it is pure engineering: a heron’s head and that long dagger of a bill are heavy, and carrying them out front would put the center of gravity somewhere ahead of the wings. Folding the neck brings the weight back over the wing roots, and the trailing legs balance what’s left behind. Weight and balance, solved without a single calculation.
He looks unhurried, and that is deceptive too. Those slow, deep wingbeats — barely two a second — move him along at twenty to thirty miles an hour. Big wings on a light body means he can cruise all day at what appears to be a leisurely flap.
