White plumage is a blank canvas that takes on the color of whatever light is falling on it, which means an egret is gold at sunrise and sunset, faintly blue in open shade, and pink for a few minutes after the sun is gone. This photograph is really two light sources in one frame — warm sun on the bird, cool skylight on the river — and the contrast between them is what makes her glow.
She is at rest, neck folded back into the shoulders in the compact S that herons and egrets adopt when they are not hunting. It is also how you tell one in flight: an egret flies with the neck tucked, a crane or stork flies with it stretched straight out ahead.
