The Cooper’s Hawk is an accipiter — a woodland hawk built for the chase, with short rounded wings, a long rudder of a tail, and the agility to fold through a thicket at full speed after other birds. In a portrait like this, though, what you feel is the eyes. A raptor’s eyes sit almost fixed in their sockets, so to study something it turns its whole head and fixes you with that level, calculating stare. It reads as curiosity.
