This is Prince — the beautiful collie I grew up with. I caught him here in the last golden light of an evening, standing in the grass with that full mane lit up like something out of a storybook.
The rough collie is the classic Lassie dog — gentle, loyal, endlessly patient, bred over generations to work close beside people. That magnificent double coat and the long, noble face are unmistakable. But what a photograph can’t quite hold is the temperament: collies are famously soft-hearted, watchful, and devoted. Anyone who grew up with one knows.
Prince was that kind of dog for me. This is an old photograph, brought back and printed large, so a little of that golden evening can hang on a wall. If you loved a collie once — or love one now — I think you’ll recognize the look in his eyes.
