Description
A bumblebee buried in the pink of a rhododendron, photographed in my own backyard. Everything about this frame is soft — the petals, the light, the astonishing fuzz of the bee herself — except the rust-orange band across her abdomen, which is the one hard clue to who she is.
That orange band, the yellow thorax with its dark central spot, and the early rhododendron bloom together point to Bombus melanopygus, the Black-tailed Bumble Bee — the earliest bumblebee to emerge in the Pacific Northwest, and a familiar sight in Portland gardens.
