Description
A yellow-faced bumblebee in full flight, pollen basket loaded, coming in on a spike of camas against open blue sky. Flight shots of bumblebees are hard-won — they are fast, they do not hover politely, and the light has to be perfect. This one came together.
She is Bombus vosnesenskii, the Yellow-faced Bumble Bee — the most abundant bumblebee in Portland and one of the largest. The flower is camas, a Pacific Northwest native whose bulbs were among the most important food plants of the region’s Indigenous peoples. A native bee, a native flower, and a working relationship older than the city.
