Look at how completely they vanish into the trunk. That plumage is not a color scheme, it is bark camouflage, and a screech owl pressed against a tree in daylight is genuinely difficult to find even when you know exactly where it is. It is their entire daytime strategy: sit still, look like wood, wait for dark. When something alarms them they go further — stretching tall and thin, tufts up, eyes narrowed to slits, until the outline stops reading as a bird at all.
The eyes are the other half of the design, and they cost something. An owl’s eyes are so large relative to its skull that there is no room left for them to move — they are fixed tubes rather than spheres, which is why an owl swivels its whole head instead of glancing sideways. What it buys is extraordinary light-gathering: these two will hunt in conditions where we would be feeling our way along a fence.
