A female Anna’s hummingbird on a lichen-covered branch, wings held out and bill lifted to the limb above her, in the protected woods along the Willamette in Portland. Everything about this photograph is soft: no direct sun, no hard highlight, just the light that has already been filtered through a forest canopy before it reaches her. It is the kind of light you cannot ask for and cannot manufacture — you can only be standing there when the canopy delivers it.
She is a study in camouflage. Where the male Anna’s wears the famous rose-magenta crown, the female is green and gray and soft white, and against moss and lichen she very nearly disappears. That is not modesty; it is survival. She will raise a brood entirely alone, and a nesting female who cannot be seen is a nesting female who survives.
The posture suggests she is working. Female hummingbirds build their nests from plant down and spider silk and then shingle the outside with flakes of lichen — the same lichen growing on this branch — so that the finished cup looks like nothing more than a knot on a limb. The spider silk is the engineering: it holds everything together and lets the nest stretch as the chicks grow. She is fuller-bodied here than usual, which often means a female carrying eggs, close to laying.
This stretch of wooded bank is protected, and it shows — woodpeckers, owls and songbirds all use it. It is a reminder of how much a city can hold if a strip of forest is simply left alone.
