An osprey carrying a fish, water still coming off both of them, autumn woods thrown into color behind. Wings out, feet forward, and the catch turned to point exactly the way the bird is going.
That last detail is the whole photograph. The fish is not simply gripped — it is aimed. Held crosswise it would be a drag brake, a slab of dead weight fighting the air the entire way home. So the osprey rotates it in flight, sometimes still climbing out of the strike, until it lies head-forward and belly-down like a torpedo slung under a fuselage. A bird hauling a fish that can weigh a third of its own body needs every bit of that.
It can do this because its feet are unlike any other raptor’s. The outer toe reverses — it swings backward so the foot closes two toes forward and two back, a pincer rather than a clamp. The pads are covered in spicules, short barbed spines for holding something slick that very much wants to leave. Ospreys are odd enough in this respect that taxonomists put them in a family of their own, apart from the hawks and eagles entirely.
The dive that preceded this frame is its own piece of engineering. An osprey hovers, judges the depth, then goes in feet-first from height and disappears under the surface — closing its nostrils on the way down — before beating its way back into the air fully loaded and soaked. They are the only raptor that plunges like that as a matter of routine, and they miss more often than they connect.
All of which is worth remembering the next time you see a bald eagle take a fish out of an osprey’s feet in midair. This is the bird that did the work. I have written about that arrangement elsewhere — I call it the fish tax.
