Description

A great blue heron in profile against soft blue water, neck folded back into the shoulders, the long gray lance of the bill held level, and the chest plumes hanging in loose strands like a fringed coat. The background is river gone completely out of focus, which leaves nothing in the frame to look at but the bird.

He is Portland’s official city bird — a title he has held since 1986 — and he earns it every day along the Willamette. There is a heron rookery at Oaks Bottom, and birds from it work the whole river through town: the industrial reach, the park shallows, the flooded ditch behind the grocery store. For a bird that looks like it belongs in a wilderness documentary, he is an extremely committed urbanite.

Here is the thing people get wrong about him. He stands about four feet tall with a wingspan near six, so everyone assumes he is heavy. He is not. A great blue heron weighs roughly five or six pounds — less than a house cat, less than a gallon of milk. Almost all of that apparent size is feathers, air, and hollow bone. It is why he can stand on a slender branch over the water, and why he lifts off with two lazy beats and no apparent effort.

The wide format suits him. It gives the bird room to be long without cropping the plumes, and it hangs well over a mantel or a desk.
