Description

A great white egret with her wings spread like an angel, photographed from behind and lit from the front, on a fallen log at the water’s edge. Every feather in the primaries is separated and glowing, the head is bowed, and the whole background has fallen away into black. It is the closest thing to a religious painting I have made with a camera.

This one is deliberately in the spirit of Ansel Adams — black and white, wide tonal range, deep shadow protected on one end and clean bright detail held on the other. Color would add nothing here. The bird is already white; what makes the photograph is tone, and stripping the color out lets the light do all of the talking.

The pose is real behavior, not a trick of timing. Egrets and herons hold their wings open like this to brake on landing, to steady themselves on an awkward perch, to shade the water so they can see fish beneath the glare, and simply to dry out and warm up. Whatever her reason, for about a second and a half she looked like something that had come down rather than something that had landed.

Worth remembering while you look at those feathers: plumes like these nearly finished the species. Great white egrets were slaughtered in enormous numbers to decorate hats, and the public outrage over it helped launch the American conservation movement. The egret has been the symbol of the National Audubon Society ever since. Every one of these birds you see today is the result of people deciding to stop.

This is a high-resolution digital download of the photograph, made in Portland, Oregon — yours to print for your home or office, set as a wallpaper, or simply keep. It is a natural candidate for a black frame and a white mat.

What you’ll receive: a high-resolution JPEG, approximately 3424 × 2464 pixels — sharp enough to print at full photo quality up to about 11 × 8 inches at 300 DPI, and comfortably larger at normal wall viewing distances. Delivered as an instant download the moment your order is complete.
